Jack Hawthorne has no ties to hold her down. She left home — and her beloved little sister — long ago, disguised as a man and aching for adventure. Now she’s become a hardened wandering cowherd with only her lover Lazarus at her side.

That is, until Laz is brutally murdered by a gang of outlaws.

Jack is saved from certain death by Ianthe Iordanes, the mysterious proprietor of a ranch called Devil’s Bush. The ranch is on the verge of collapse, hedged in by Indian territory and the mining town of Loveday. Ianthe reveals her intentions to transform the town into a haven for troubled women, and Jack jumps at the opportunity to work as her right hand.

But what seemed to be a font of hope reveals something sinister beneath. Ianthe’s motives are far from altruistic. The world is full of desperate women, and Ianthe intends to turn them all into her playthings.

When Lazarus’s restless spirit wrests Jack from Ianthe’s control, and her sister arrives in Loveday, Jack is forced to decide: will she spend the rest of her days under the heel of the Devil, or risk everything to save the ones she loves?
